Good Vibrations

“I’m pickin’ up good vibrations, she’s giving me excitations…good, good, good vibrations.”

(Beach Boys-“Good Vibrations” 1964)

The Beach Boys had it right as they sang about something that affects every one of us deeply. It is the vibrational movement of energy in all of life, the universe and everything in it, the vibrations of frequencies. We experience the effects of frequencies both physically and intuitively through our five senses (taste, touch, smell, sight, hearing) and through our inner sensing of atmosphere and environment.

We are, in short, ‘receivers’ much like radios or other instruments designed to detect and tune in signals. We are detecting, pulling in, frequency signals continuously whether we are aware of it or not. But, we are more than receivers. We are also ‘transmitters’. We are not just passively receiving or taking in the frequencies of the universe, but are also continually sending them out. Thus the truth of the Beach Boys’ words. We pick up vibrations and experience their excitations; and, also send the same out to others. The real question is what frequencies are we tuning in? Are they ‘good vibrations’?

When I speak of “good vibrations” I am not referring to essence or nature of certain vibrations as being ‘good’ as opposed to ones being ‘bad’. The infinite frequencies of the universe, created by God and continually releasing life into all that exists are, by their nature, ‘good’. In other words, each one has its divine creative purpose, and since God is good all that He creates is good.

The issue is really one of alignment and purpose. It was the Apostle Paul who wrote: “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.” (1 Cor. 6:12) The immediate context of his words is on objective, physical decisions and actions; in short, we can freely choose what it is we want to do in our lives. However, we recognize that not everything is beneficial to us even though it may be ‘lawful’ or legal. There is in this a principle that goes way beyond the physical, deep into the fabric of our being. Just because all frequencies are ultimately good (according to Divine creative purpose) does not mean that all frequencies are beneficial to us as human beings. Let me explain it this way.

Within the biblical account of man’s creation in Genesis 1;26-28 is an eternal truth of our identity and purpose. It is both mysterious and wondrous in that we are created in the image of God and from that place of ‘image’ (identity) we are called to reflect or personify God in the earth realm (purpose). In other words, we are connected to God, intimately and inseparably, in a fashion that enables us to receive and resonate with and in His very Person. We are like Him, compatible in every way and from that place of compatibility to reflect or release His life. We are, in short, divinely created ‘receivers’ and ‘transmitters’ of God.

Now the compatibility to reflect is directly dependent upon alignment. The closer we draw to the heart of God the more we will be in tune with His heart; and, the more in tune with His heart the more we will release what we find there. We will, in fact, transmit or release the goodness of the Lord. One of the most powerful illustrations of all this is found in the book of Philippians:

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near.

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.

All things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.  (Philippians 4:4-9)

These wonderful words speak of life in all its dimensions that resonates with and reflects the heart of God, the goodness of the Lord. This is what I call “Good Vibrations”.

So, here’s something to ponder. When we think of frequencies we often think in terms of light and sound; but, what about the thoughts, attitudes, and intentions of our hearts? What about the words we, not only think, but speak? I believe there is as much power in these areas as there is in any other. As we focus, or tune in, the beauty of truth, honor, righteousness, purity, loveliness, excellence, worship that flows from God’s heart we will, in fact, begin to resonate with the same frequencies. We will find our lives filled with peace and gentleness. This, in turn, will have a powerful impact on the world around us.
